IECB

The IECB (European Institute of Chemistry and Biology) is an atypical institute in France. Created in 1998 at the instigation of Alain Rousset, Président of the Nouvelle Aquitaine Region, the IECB is an incubator for project teams bringing together some of most promising chemists and biologists in a multidisciplinary environment, to develop research programs of the highest European standard. Teams are selected by an international Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The IECB's scientific identity has been built at the interface between the fields of chemistry, biology and biomedical sciences. Research teams are hosted for a limited period of time (generally 10 years, with extensions subject to approval by an international scientific committee). Each team is a member of a research unit (UMR) on the Bordeaux site.

IECB comprises an exceptional technology park in biophysics and structural biology, featuring 8 platforms: NMR, X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, high-resolution electron microscopy, peptide synthesis, biochemistry and techniques for characterizing molecular interactions. In 2007, the CNRS / Univ. Bordeaux Unit UMS3033 was created . In 2011, the Unit also became an Inserm Service Unit (US01). In 2020, the Unit became a Research Support Unit (UAR3033).

The IECB's aim is to nurture new research themes at the chemistry/biology interface, by providing promising young researchers with a fertile breeding ground in which to develop their projects. What's more, the incubation period for project teams at the IECB is long enough to allow for the emergence of new, creative collaborations between teams.

Group Leader positions at IECB are regularly open. The selection process aims to attract talented researchers capable of conducting cutting-edge research and contributing to the dynamic scientific environment of IECB. After an initial evaluation by a selection committee composed of experienced IECB researchers and external members. Shortlisted candidates are then invited for an interview on site at IECB, in the presence of the SAB. Following these interviews, successful candidates are invited to join the IECB as Group Leaders. They will receive seed funding for their setup and will be required to apply for additional funding to support their start at IECB. They will also receive guidance to secure a tenured research position in France, if they do not already hold one.

The project teams are recruited with profiles in synthetic chemistry, biophysics, structural biology and cell biology, and the technical platform must be maintained at the highest level in these fields. The interface themes are summarized below.

Today, the IECB is the largest project hotel recognized by the CNRS. 13 accredited research teams, several hosted teams, 1 start-up and a research support unit (UAR3033/US001), i.e. almost 150 researchers, technicians and students, work on the site every day.
