Circular Dichroïsm


Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy measures the absorption difference between left and right circularly polarized light. A molecule containing a chiral chromophore or if locate in a chiral environment can exhibit a CD signal.


CD can be used for

  • Characterization of secondary and tertiary protein structure.
  • Topology of nucleic acids structures (A-helix, B-helix, Z-helix, G-quadruplexes structure), and their complexes with small molecules.
  • Synthetic molecules in solution.
  • Estimation of the contents in secondary structure (alpha-helix, beta-sheet) in sample.
  • Control of the folding  of molecule.
  • Study of conformational changes (as a function of time, solvent,…).
  • Analysis of the stability of samples in their physicochemical environment.
  • Analysis of ligands or lipids fixation on target molecule.

  • The circular dichroism J-815 instrument can be operated only if the user has followed a training course dispensed by the technical manager of the CD platform. Contact the technical manager to have the training.
