Prof. Tomohiko Ohwada & Dr. Yuko Otani from the University of Tokyo will give a seminar Wednesday December 17th at 2pm.

Prof. Tomohiko Ohwada will present a seminar entitled: “Bonding-active Chemical Species Containing Nitrogen Atoms”

Short bio:

Tomohiko Ohwada is a distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His expertise spans organic, medicinal, structural, and computational chemistry, with a focus on synthesizing novel molecules for biological and medical applications. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1987 and has held prestigious roles globally, including visiting professorships in the U.S., France, and China. With 185 publications, 21 patents, and over 6,000 citations, Ohwada research work focuses on peptide drug synthesis, protein interactions, and computational simulations. In 2022, he  obtained the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan Award, which is he most prestigious award in The Pharmaceuticval Society of Japan.

Dr. Yuko Otani will present a seminar entitled: “Efficient Synthesis and Application of Cyclic Peptides Using Photo-responsive Amino Acids”

Short bio:

Yuko Otani is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, at the University of Tokyo. Her research focuses on organic synthesis, nonplanar amides, and peptide chemistry, particularly the design of artificial amino acids to modulate peptide structures and properties. She earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from The University of Tokyo in 2005, under the guidance of Prof. Tomohiko Ohwada. She performed first a postdoctoral fellow at Rikagaku Kenkyusho institute in Tokyo and then at Columbia University. Then, she was appointed as a lecturer at The University of Tokyo, and she is now associate professor since 2014. She received the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan Award for Division of Organic Chemistry in 2022.
